The works of the Chicana authors that came to prominence in the mid to late 1989s were characteristically highly experimental, in their hybrid narratives; their fusion of prose and poetry; autobiography and essay, myth and history; and their blending of English and Spanish. Such experimentalism has prompted Mermann-Jozwiak (English, Texas A&M U. at Corpus Christi) to examine the relationship between these works and theories of postmodernism. The writings of Gloria Anzaldúa, Pat Mora, Helena María Viramontes, Norma Elía Cantú, Ana Castillo, and Sandra Cisneros are analyzed as contributing to the ongoing evolution of understandings of postmodernism.
