In the late 1940s, Irish newspaper The Kerryman published several volumes of contemporary (and near-contemporary) accounts of the fight for Irish independence. This latest book to be reissued by Mercier Press' focuses on the campaigns in Cork during the War of Independence. Beginning with accounts of the formation of the Irish Volunteer Force, writers report firsthand on events including the campaigns of the Cork City Volunteers, the murder of Tómas MacCurtain, the disastrous battle of Clonmult, and the activities of the East Cork Brigade. An introduction by Peter Hart sets the contemporary accounts into historic and social perspective, and 16 pages of contemporary black and white photographs add to the feeling of being there during Ireland's struggle for independence.
