The March 2008 workshop in Davis, California that underlies the volume allowed both students and veteran scientists to describe the cutting edge of their research at the interface of biology and physics. Their perspectives include theory and simulation, supported model bilayers, and clinical applications. The 12 papers discuss such topics as a differential geometric approach to membrane elasticity and mediated interactions in continuum theory, collective dynamics in lipid membranes from pore formation to flip-flops, the spatio-temporal organization of spin-coated supported model membranes, the lifecycle of a lipoprotein from a biophysical perspective, and targeting apo-lipoproteins in magnetic resonance imaging.
