Stories from American folklore as well as other ethnic traditions such as Native American, African American, Irish, French, and German, are presented in this collection of tales from 27 states east of the Mississippi River plus Washington DC. State chapters include up to six folktales or true stories, plus a brief glossary of historical people, places, and things, and a list of story sources. Native American stories are presented with permission of the tribes represented or by permission of recognized Native American storytellers. The stories are appropriate for grades four through six as a supplement to the social studies curriculum, however, the type size and layout are not reader-friendly for the younger end of this age group, and the book may best serve as a storytime resource to be read aloud by the teacher.
