Noting that American children tend to score lower in the spatial and geometric sections of the Trends in International Mathematics Study than in number sense and problem solving, Pollman (early childhood education, Metropolitan State College of Denver) suggests that they could benefit from the work of German pedagogue Friedrich Froebel (1782-1582) on spatial thinking in early education. Building on Froebel's ideas, she presents current research and practice in math, science, and other curriculum areas related to spatial development in early childhood.
