The concept of a British World was a common one from the late 19th century until the 1950s, but with the advent of new historians such as Ronald Robinson and John Gallagher, the history of the colonies became more and more removed from the history of the imperial center until Linda Colley's 1992 work, Britain: Forging the Nation, 1707-1837 re-energized the debate by positing the notion of a form of British identity that co-exists with other identities. Buckner (Institute for Commonwealth Studies, U. of London, UK) and Francis (history, U. of Calgary, Canada) present 19 papers that grapple with this renewed debate about the Britishness of the Dominions and their relationship to the imperial center. More specific topics include imperial identity on radio and film, British South Africa in the First World War, Fabian Socialism in British Australia, colonial womanhood and settler identity, and loyalty and imperial citizenship at the League of Nations.
