Together Holt and Holt have worked 30 years developing and operating programs and services for the poor at St. Louis Public Library. The poor, they say, have been the library's core constituency for at least two generations, but are now being joined by people driven out of the middle class by the super-rich. Among their perspectives are ambivalences about poverty, what keeps poor people from using libraries, public access computers and their implications, general programs and specific services that help the poor, how the libraries should help the homeless, partnerships and collaborations that enrich library services to the poor, and poverty and library essentiality.
