Dunkerly, Chief Ranger of Moores Creek National Battlefield in North Carolina details women's involvement in battles in North and South Carolina from the earliest days of the war to 1781. He shows how the values of the eighteenth century created women who were strong, intelligent and self-reliant, if only out of anger over what they were expected to be in a patriarchal society. He relates stories from a wide range of locales and describes women dealing with confiscation, sending their men to battle (and joining them), learning new technologies standing alongside men in the smoke and screaming, caring for the wounded, and burying the dead.
