Basing their work on the study of Chinese and English bilingual dictionaries, the authors (both of Guangdong U. of Business Studies, China) aim to establish a triangular communicative model of lexicography that regards the bilingual dictionary as a system of intercultural communication between compiler and user. After establishing their communicative theoretical framework, they comparatively study monolingual and bilingual dictionaries in regard to lexicographic choices, analyze the influence of modern linguistics upon the development of bilingual lexicography, and discuss its status quo and future development. Along the way they explore theoretical aspects such as the nature of the dictionary, the relation of linguistics to bilingual lexicography, typological classification, structural description, and principles governing intercultural lexicographic communication, together with practical issues regarding the actualization of bilingual dictionary making, revision, and supplementation.
