Budeiri (politics, Birzeit U., Palestine) presents a history of the Palestine Communist Party that focuses on how it approached the dilemma of adhering to internationalism in the context of acute polarization caused by the nationalist settler project of Zionism and Arab nationalist rejection of Zionism. Combining archival research with findings from interviews of participants in the PCP, he identifies three distinct phases for the communist movement in Palestine: 1919-29, the birth of the movement from within the ranks of labor Zionism; 1930-42, marked by a preoccupation with anticolonial revolution and the rise of an Arab orientation that widened the gulf between Arab and Jewish members; and 1943-57, the solidification of nationalism politics amid continued lip service to internationalism.
