Snævarr (Lillehammer University College, Norway) explores the relationships between metaphor, narrative, and emotions as meaning-endowing devices, drawing on material from his articles, conference papers, and essays published over the past 10 years. The first part of the book examines the nature of metaphor and offers a critical evaluation of the ideas of thinkers including Donald Davidson, Max Black, Mary Hesse, Nietzsche, and Derrida. The next section introduces the author's original concepts of narrative and storied structure and examines the concept of non-fictional narratives through a discussion of the ideas of theorists such as Jerome Bruner and Arthur Danto. The relationship between fictional and non-fictional narratives is explored using Hayden White's theories as a point of departure. The last section, on the poetic of emotions, criticizes biological, reductive ideas on emotions, and argues that emotions can have cognitive import. Following an examination of Charles Taylor's hermeneutic view of emotions, the author develops his own hermeneutic construalism. A conclusion summarizes points made throughout the book.
