Jamero is as a member of the "Bridge Generation"--the sons and daughters born in America before the end of WWII to the first generation of Filipinos to reside in the U.S. His memoir--the first from a bridge-generation Filipino American--describes his childhood years, growing up in central California in a Filipino farm-labor camp, learning the values of family, community, hard work, and education--and his first encounters with discrimination. The author then discusses his experiences in the U.S. Navy, at college and graduate school, and in a series of professional positions of increasing responsibilities, among them directing the Washington State vocational rehabilitation program, teaching rehabilitation medicine at the U. of Washington, and leading the Asian American Recovery Services in San Francisco.
