In the span of four centuries, Europeans settled and forcefully appropriated lands that had been inhabited by American Indians. Author Rielly (English, Saint Joseph's College of Maine) provides a chronological history of Indian resistance during that time and the Indian leaders. Of the 12 Indian leaders discussed, many will be immediately familiar to readers: Tecumseh, Pontiac, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Chief Joseph. Others, such as Dennis James Banks and Mary Brave Bird may not be quite so familiar. All, however, are well-described in this history. Period illustrations also are included.
