Fourteen original essays by sociologists and other scholars explore the dynamics of "music scenes" those sites where musicians, producers, and fans share common musical tastes and lifestyle choices. Contributions in the first section consider local scenes (such as Chicago blues) that are confined to specific areas. Essays in the next section explore the links between scattered local scenes that center around a particular type of music or lifestyle (i.e., goth, anarcho-punk, etc.).
