Moacanin (history, U. of Zagreb) examines the repercussions of Ottoman rule between the rivers Sava, Drava and Danube in the early modern period, with an intent to find whether his interpretations of primary sources also apply to wider areas of the Ottoman empire at the time. Building his interpretations from narratives, tax records and other primary sources, he introduces readers to Hungary in the fifteenth century, especially late medieval Slavonia. He then focuses on the effects of Ottoman rule in the form of settlements in villages and finds mixed results, judging from the tax records, then analyzes the same findings in towns and amongst individuals. He tests his findings in demographics and social and economic issues across a broader field and finds his methods useful in detecting not only changes but continuity; he also finds "invisible" taxpayers and a variety of interpretations the Ottomans had for what constituted a tax unit.
