The ability to target cells for drug delivery will minimize side effects and increase the usefulness of some drugs. Bringing together contributors from research organizations and the pharmaceutical industry, Lu (School of Pharmacy, Temple U.) and O>ie (College of Pharmacy, U. of Georgia) present an overview of the principles and practice of targeted cellular delivery. After treating the fundamental concepts, the spectrum of delivery principles are discussed, including cell-mediated immunity, gene deliver, protein targeting, drug transport, and cellular drug permeability. Technological developments are also discussed, including drug targeting with immunoglobulin formulations and anti-body-mediated approaches.
