California-based Kovalik and Olsen combine decades of experience as education professionals to create this practical, hands-on text for teachers describing the use of brain research on how the human brain learns to inform and improve science education. The model presented in the text, originally known as the Kovalik ITI (Integrated Thematic Instruction) and now known as the Highly Effective Teaching (HET) model, emerged during the late 1970s. As head of the Mid-California Science Improvement Program, Olsen directed a 10-year effort to improve science education using the model from 1987-96.
