After retiring from the US Army as a brigadier general, Kinnard went on to an academic career in political science and military history. His 1977 study reported the attitudes of two-thirds of the US Army generals who were commanders in Vietnam from the beginning of the American troop commitment in early 1965 to their final departure in early 1973. In 1974 when they filled out the questionnaires, he says, their experiences and opinions were raw and of course uninformed by subsequent events. The original was published by the University Press of New England for the University of Vermont.
