With Le voluntaire et l'involuntaire (1950), French philosopher Ricoeur's (1913-2005) began work distinct from the writing he did in and as a result of his time in a German prisoner of war camp during World War II. It sets out here the themes that he developed in the rest of the trilogy, on the philosophy of will, which he completed in 1960. The translation is by Erazim V. Kohák (emeritus philosophy, Boston U.), and was first published in 1966. A new foreword, by Don Ihde (philosophy, Stony Book U., New York), has been added to this reprint edition.
