The many snakes encountered during the construction of the Pyote Army Airfield in West Texas earned the base the nickname of "Rattlesnake Bomber Base." This huge airfield was the final training destination for bomber crews before they headed off to combat in WWII. Alexander (Texas Historical Commission) describes the growth and wartime culture of the base as a microcosm of what took place all across North America during the war.
