To provide a balanced view of the place of Muslim women in a globalized world, Kassam (religious studies, Ponoma College, Claremont, CA) introduces 14 chapters that address the challenges they face both within and outside Islamic countries and how they draw upon their faith to meet them. These challenges include working for change within narrow interpretations of the Qur'an and family law in authoritarian regimes, social role dislocations in war-torn countries, violence against women, and maintaining their identity in increasingly Islamophobic contexts. Authors argue that struggles to become empowered socioeconomically and politically are not uniquely Islamic women's issues.
