Zones of peace, according to Hancock (political science, Kent State U.) and Mitchell (emeritus, conflict analysis, George Mason U.), are a new and emerging strategy for coping with local and regional violence. These zones are self-organized areas refuge for victims of violence that "emerge as an expression of collective will and are a function of the negotiated relationships within the zone as well as those outside the zone." Seven case studies describe and analyze the emergence of zones of peace in conflicts in the Philippines, Colombia, Peru, El Salvador, the former Yugoslavia, Aceh (Indonesia), and Sudan.
