Harada (library and information science, the University of Hawaii-Manoa) and Yoshina, a veteran school teacher and school librarian, examine learning assessment in a school library context and show how school librarians can help students to assess their own information literacy. After a discussion of national reform efforts, they present strategies and tools for involving students in library-related learning activities. Some of the tools described include checklists and rubrics, conferences and logs, graphic organizers, and student portfolios. New to this second edition, there are three chapters on assessing for critical thinking, acquiring and assessing for dispositions (defined as attitudes and learning behaviors), and technology-related learning. Three final chapters present chapter-length examples of an outcomes-based approach used at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. A conclusion explains how to communicate results of assessment to teachers, principals, and the larger community. The book includes many sample forms.
