In this account, van de Logt (history, Benedictine College) brings the experiences of the Pawnee scouts themselves to the foreground, rather than merely relying on accounts of the career of their commander, Major Frank North. The author argues, "North may have been in charge, but the tactics, style, and conduct of warfare were decidedly Pawnee." He corrects factual errors in the well-known accounts by Major North's brother Luther North and by his contemporary by George Bird Grinnell, and looks at further sources such as military records, archival sources, and contemporary interviews with current Pawnee tribal members, some of them descendents of the scouts. These sources allow the author to give details on the lives of individual scouts and their lives after the war, as well as their efforts to secure military pensions and to preserve Pawnee land and culture. The book includes a wealth of b&w historical photos, plus a foreword by Walter Echo-Hawk, an attorney, historian, and member of the Pawnee Nation.
