This is a biography of Dorothy Harrison Eustis(1886-1946), founder of The Seeing Eye, the first guide dog school in the United States. The work relies on newspaper articles, family correspondence, speeches, and Eustis's personal papers to describe a life of philanthropy and dog training. Organized chronologically into fifteen short chapters, the volume covers Eustis's Philadelphia childhood, private school education, two marriages, motherhood, move to Switzerland, foundation of The Seeing Eye, and eventual death from breast cancer in 1946. The work contains numerous black and white photographs. This biography will appeal to a general audience interested in the history of guide dogs and twentieth century philanthropy.
