Retired from teaching archaeology in his native South Carolina, Charles explains that before the first find in 1983, prehistoric rock art was not thought to be present in the state. Once people started looking, more came to light, and in 1997 scholars and volunteers began to conduct a formal survey to seek and record the rock art. Limiting their search to the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountains, where most have been found, they concentrated on petroglyphs and pictographs considered to be products of prehistoric peoples and on historic carvings believed to be of some antiquity or particular interest. His account of the project discusses the survey, rock-art motifs, portable petroglyphs, circle-and-line petroglyphs, historic-period rock art, and prehistoric pictographs.
