Griffin (emeritus, philosophy of religion and theology, Claremont Graduate U.), who has played a key role over the past decade in promoting arguments that the official US government narrative concerning the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon doesn't hold water and that there is sufficient evidence to suggest US government complicity so as to require independent investigation, here turns his attention to a notorious essay by prominent legal scholar Cass Sunstein, currently the Obama-appointed Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, titled "Conspiracy Theories: Causes and Cures," which was published online in 2008 and in the Journal of Political Philosophy in June 2009. While the essay attracted widespread criticism for its apparent recommendation that the government engage in propaganda and even coercive activities to counter (disapproved) conspiracy theories, Griffin, although agreeing that the abstract criticisms of the general principles promoted by Sunstein in the paper are perfectly valid, narrows his focus to rebutting Sunstein's characterizations of the "theories that arise from and post-date the 9/11 attacks" (Sunstein's words) and those people that promote them, as well as their likely societal and political effects, which Griffin properly understands as Sunstein's main focus in the essay.
