Unlike some guidebooks, this one relies on only one climber's assessments throughout. Roach, who has climbed all of the Fourteeners, describes standard routes as well as alternate routes on the easier Fourteeners, and also several technical routes. Each route is rated in a number of categories. The trailheads described are places most vehicles can reach. The book is illustrated with color photos and a total of 31 color elevation maps. An introductory chapter covers safety, protecting the environment, and climbing goals. Chapters on routes are divided into the Fourteeners's six different ranges. Within chapters are entries on each peak and on specific trails and routes. Each peak entry includes fact boxes elevations, location, coordinates, ownership and contact info, map sources, and nearby towns. About 30 pages of appendices offer peak and route lists, and peaks sorted by elevation, prominence, quadrangle, and range. Routes are sorted by the author's own rating system, new for this edition.
