Sunseri (sociology, Brescia University College, Canada) combines post-colonial and feminist theories with her own Oneida upbringing to produce a study of the place of women in traditional Oneida culture and the ways in which colonization has subverted it. Relying on interviews with several women and on Oneida history, she challenges the belief that nationalism reduces the status of women. Particularly, she argues that the term "mothers of the nation" is neither pejorative nor demeaning but empowering, as the Oneida Creation story explains. She suggests that women and men would be better served through a return to indigenous egalitarian social patterns. Told from the inside, with a good understanding of Western sociological theory, this is a dissenting voice that should be listened to. Distributed by UTP Distribution.
