The first CD-ROM archives of a major United Nations conference makes good use of the technology. It contains the documents related to UNCED, which was the second international conference on the environment (the first was in Stockholm in 1972), held in Brazil in June 1992, at the level of heads of state or government. It is designed to run under Windows, and it can be used on a local area network if desired; the contents are also accessible as ASCII files. The search and display software operates in English, French, or Spanish; and most of the documents are also available in all three languages. The software is flexible and clear, allowing all kinds of searching (although it takes some study to get the hang of it, of course), and providing "hotlink" cross references to related documents and access to graphics or tables, as well as allowing for the printing and copying of both text and graphics.
