Just over five weeks after the Titantic disaster the Hamburg-Amerika line launched the first of three new superliners. This ship, SS Imperator, was to lead a chequered life. When built she was the longest ship in the world and probably the most luxurious. She and her sisters, Vaterland and Bismark, were intended to be the best ships on the transatlantic run but war intervened and Imperator was laid up for the duration. Vaterland was interned in New York and Bismark lay unfinished until 1922.<BR>At the end of the First World War, Imperator was operated then bought by Cunard. She was renamed Berengaria and became the Cunard flagship. Her life with Cunard was long and productive, but by the late 1930s she was becoming both uneconomic and unsafe. Plagued by small fires throughout her life, she was sold to the breakers in 1939.
