The multiliteracies approach proposes that literacy teaching should be more responsive to the diversity of cultures and subcultures and to the variety of languages within societies. The multiliteracies approach also embraces the text forms associated with information and multimedia technologies. Mills, a postdoctoral fellow at Queensland University of Technology, illustrates the multiliteracies approach with scenarios and transcripts from one real classroom, showing how teacher Jennifer guides 23 socio-economically disadvantaged, upper-primary students in the creation of digital animations, movies, and web pages for various communication tasks. The narrative is interwoven with theoretical discussion of issues related to critical and creative pedagogy, media and access, new social spaces, power and excluded learners, and the relationship between power and print-based literacies.
