Newman examines how Judaic literature of the exile and post-exile period show a much greater concern with praying than before, and how many of the prayers drew from early scripture. She illustrates three paradigmatic ways in which scripture is appropriated in prayers: reviews of history, the typological reprise of one event from the biblical period, and the use of a list of biblical characters as archetypes of some good or bad behavior.
