Pavlish (nursing, UCLA) and Pharris (nursing, St. Catherine U.) propose an accessible framework for community-based collaborative action research (CBCAR), which can be used by nurse researchers, clinicians, leaders, and graduate and doctoral students in partnership with communities experiencing health disparities or with organizations needing system improvements. The authors' research framework blends the unitary participatory paradigm, the socio-ecological perspective, and action-based science with the tenets of human rights and social justice; it can be used to identify and analyze barriers to health and well-being and to design systemic and structural improvements. Following an explanation of the theoretical foundation of CBCAR, advice is given on planning the research process, data collection and analysis, action planning, and preparing grant proposals for CBCAR projects.
