In this collection of updated articles and lectures, Woods (theology, Dominican U. and trustee, The Eckhart Society) attempts to make the mystical teachings of Meister Eckhart (d. 1328) accessible to readers who may not be familiar with Eckhart, while still engaging Eckhart scholars. An introductory chapter reviews Eckhart's life and basics of his doctrine. Of special interest is a chapter on Eckhart's Christology, an element of his theological doctrine that is often overlooked. Other topics include women's roles in spirituality and church life, the sacredness of creation, the meaning of detachment, the place of prayer, and Eckhart's insights into the challenges of pain and suffering.
