Burstein and Gagné compile 19 essays in honor of music theorist Carl Schachter in sections on expression, theory, style, words and music, and form. Essays are by his colleagues and students and many are based on presentations given at a symposium in his honor in May of 1999, which was sponsored by Queens College, City U. of New York. The essays cover diverse topics such as analyses of pieces by Chopin, Schumman, Brahms, Bach, and Haydn; Schenkerian and eighteenth-century theories; the music of Bill Evans; Baroque music and style; and East Asian music.
