The book was first published in 2000 by Sagebrush Press and is now re-released by Heyday Books. These are among the finest baskets of any Native American group and come from the harshest of climates--the area of Death Valley, California and Nevada and environs. Slater provides some history and biographies of nine basket weavers and an equal number of early collectors. Many fair to good color photos of notable baskets and (b&w) shots of the land and people are included. This is an important contribution to the study of an obscure group.
