In this collection of 10 essays, Christie and Simpson (both of the U. of Sydney, Australia) set up a dialogue between two professional communities of writers: teachers and teacher educators of language and literacy, and social workers researching or providing programs to address the needs of people with low literacy. While all contributors are committed to the idea of literacy programs as a matter of social justice, they demonstrate different approaches to research methodology. Opening chapters explore literacy and social responsibility and consider literacy as a theme in educational theory and in policy. Other topics include literacy and the arts, the social context of literacy acquisition, and enhancing literacy education for refugee children.
