Author and historian Neal offers a detailed history of the evolution of the Liberty engine, originally designed to standardize aircraft engine design. The engine could be built in a variety of sizes to accommodate a variety of uses, from training to bombing. The author chronicles the gradual development and improvement of the Liberty and its eventual incorporation into marine service and tank power plants. As the author notes, the Liberty was used in military applications from 1917 through 1960 and also was used in civilian service.
