Contributors from the UK and Canada seek to understand how education might foster reconciliation in societies affected by violent conflict, approaching both education and reconciliation as political processes. They focus on the roles of state and international actors in planning, promoting, participating in, and even preventing reconciliation and education initiatives, within the context of education policy and young people's attitudes. Case studies from Bosnia, Jordan, Northern Ireland, Peru, South Africa, Rwanda, and the US demonstrate the power and limitations of education for reconciling conflict. Specific topics include postwar education reform in Bosnia-Herzegovina; language, national reconciliation, and educational transformation in post-apartheid South Africa; and reconciliation through relationships among teachers and Sub-Saharan African families in the US.
