Disorganized attachment develops in children when parents are abusively harsh or emotionally cold. This works illustrates theory and interventions with case vignettes. In part 1, the authors present an original Pathway Model, summarizing the connections between caregiver behaviors and disorganized attachment. This section also covers identification and assessment of disorganized attachment, and reviews neurological, biochemical, and genetic explanations. Part 2 gives more details on the caregiver behaviors identified in the first section of the book, such as unresolved loss, mentalization, and reflective function. Part 3 examines the impact of theory and research on practice, and reports on the Assessment of Disorganized Attachment and Maltreatment Project, begun in 2009. A conclusion examines the implications of what the research in disorganized attachment may tell us about trends in parenting more generally.
