Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, Austria (February-June, 2011), this oversize volume (9.5x12.5") offers generous displays of the paintings as well as illuminating scholarly essays. Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was prolific during his short life, and he went down extraordinary new paths with portraiture. This presentation offers a close look at his passionate efforts to capture the inner life of his subjects and himself. Agnes Husslein-Arco is director of the Belvedere Museum; Jane Kalir is affiliated with the Galerie St. Etienne in New York City and is a specialist in Austrian art of the early 20th century. They provide a preface, an essay on the self-portraits, short texts to accompany the plates, and a chronology; and they also brought in two contributed essays on gestures as reflections of the conception of gender, and on Schiele's image of woman.
