Lencer (psychiatry and psychotherapy, U. of Muenster, Germany) et al. show mental health clinicians how to use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with patients with schizophrenia where medication management has been traditionally emphasized. After a review of current treatment approaches for psychosis, they argue for moving beyond a biological model and explain the evidence for using CBT for psychosis and how to adapt standard CBT approaches. Coverage includes the most effective techniques, how to integrate them with medication management, and how to use the techniques with chronic voice hearing and delusions, as well as with patients with dual diagnosis and in group therapy. Case studies are provided. The book was previously published in German in 2006, but has added material on the integration of CBT and medication for patients who might continuously experience symptoms such as persistent delusions and those who choose not to take medication.
