This is the second of two volumes comprising the Handbook and the two volumes are the first offerings in the publisher's new series, "Transformations in Higher Education; the Scholarship of Engagement." The initiative is a response to the Kellogg Foundation task force which has urged academic institutions to involve students in work that connects them to the wider community and to form community partnerships that are deep and long lasting and productive for all concerned. All that work is easier said than done, of course; but many have taken up the challenge, and they report here in 34 contributed chapters on the practicalities and the possibilities. Organization of contributions is in three thematic sections. The first focuses on types of engaged scholarship; the second, on measurement, assessment and accreditation; the third section addresses partnership development; and the fourth and fifth sections are devoted to national organizational models, and the future. The three editors are affiliated as follows: Hiram E. Fitzgerald (psychology, and university outreach and engagement, Michigan State U.), Cathy Burack (higher education, social policy, Brandeis U.), and Sarena D.
