This text for students and professionals in exercise science and kinesiology combines biochemistry, molecular biology, neurophysiology, and muscle physiology to provide a synthesis of current knowledge and future research directions in the field of neuromuscular exercise physiology. Although the text is written at an advanced level, the writing attempts to be accessible. The text starts with material on the relationships between motorneurons and the muscle fibers they innervate and the concept of motor unit types. Later chapters cover sites involved in the fatigue process and physiological changes at the spinal cord level and above in central fatigue. Further chapters describe changes in protein profiles of muscle fibers and in the nervous system due to aerobic endurance training. The last three chapters are concerned with resistance training: muscle molecular mechanisms in strength training, muscle property changes in strength training, and neural mechanisms in strength training.
