In the 1960's Johnny Cash had risen to stardom with his classic hit Ring of Fire, the album that followed, however, endangered his career and brought out the deep rooted ugliness of American culture. Bitter Tears was a socially conscious lament to the Native American tragedy which, in spite of Cash's good intentions, sparked controversy and race hate. As a result, Cash lost the support of Columbia Records and the country music community.
