This book presents an account by General Erhard Raus, commander of the 6th Panzer Division during the invasion of Russia in WWII. It was originally written by Raus as intelligence information provided to the US Army during the Cold War. An introductory chapter gives background on Raus and on editor Tsouras's rediscovery of the manuscript in 1971. The book's first-person combat narratives tell the stories of specific military operations, from the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1943 through the defense of Kharkov in August 1943. Each combat narrative is followed by Raus's summary of tactical lessons. The book is illustrated with b&w historical charcoal drawings from the Army Art Collection of the US Army Center of Military History and from the author's collection. The book also includes many b&w maps and a few b&w historical photos. Tsouras was affiliated with the US Army National Ground Intelligence Center.
