Thirty-two writers answered a call by the editors in January, 2001 to protest government talk of drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Jimmy Carter stresses the historic bipartisan preservation of the Arctic Refuge (in which drilling is banned until Congress votes otherwise), Bill McKibben speaks against fueling global warming and twice-killing Arctic caribou, Scott Russell Sanders compares the Refuge in space to the Sabbath in time, and Terry Tempest Williams cites restraint as the most powerful "act" of all.
