Clah (1831-1916) kept a diary for 50 years (1859-1909) recording in detail his travels up and down the west coast of North America from Washington to the Yukon. Brock (emeritus, Edith Cowan U., Perth, Australia) draws extensively from that manuscript, now at the Wellcome Library in London, but also supplementing his account with other archival sources in order to place his life in the context of the imposition of colonial rule in British Columbia. She takes a topical rather than chronological approach, with such chapters as the fur trade era, chasing gold, land matters, becoming a Christian, parading and preaching, the changing world of feasting, and old age and the end of voyaging.
