In his massive sequel to Making Peoples: a history of New Zealanders from Polynesian settlement to the end of the nineteenth century Belich (history, U. of Auckland) carries the history of New Zealand to the present. The work is divided into chronological pairs of chapters that give the political history followed by the social and cultural history for the period. Two of the main themes are what Belich calls the recolonization of New Zealand from the 1880s to the 1970s, when it was very closely linked to England both in government and sentiment, and the story of the resurgence of the Maori people.
